Heya, Monster.

A SoberBlog by a TallWoman.

Tat-Tatta-Tat-Tat-Tattoo.

I’ve been thinking about it quite a lot these past couple of weeks… I’m laughing at myself a bit because I’m so anxious to get to my 1 year, but well, I’m a ways away still. Hee. At any rate, I just came up with an idea for my 1 year celebration – a tattoo!

I have never inked my bod before, but I really like the idea of marking my sobriety. I like the idea of tattoos in general, but have a hard time committing to an image for my Life. However, I believe sobriety is important enough to carry with me Forever. (Sidenote: My brother-in-law is a continual inker, and I love what he says about tattoos – that the individual tattoo isn’t supposed to ‘last’ through life, but rather is marking a moment in life. Isn’t that beautiful?)

So, yes.

My idea for my 1 Year is a moon on my wrist, followed each new year by a new star….

Moon-over-ocean1I love the moon. I love the moon’s different manifestations, shapes, and ways of being. I love the other-worldliness of its glow. And I love the stars’ beauty, their timelessness, and the magic of thousands of stories and histories told about them. I also love what I mentioned before in another post, that we are all made of star stuff. I love the interconnectedness, the hope, and the awe-inspiring powers outside of ourselves.

Hurry up, Year. *smile* I want you to get here now!

Day 57, and yet methinks I have Astronomy….

Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”

WHEN I heard the learn’d astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

    As a person with many – too many – tattoos, I have considered doing something similar if and when I achieve a long period of sobriety. However, one thing that has held me back is the potential that, should I then fail at sobriety, the tattoo will be just a constant “forever” reminder of failure. On the other hand (or wrist, in your case), will it be a reminder to continue to be sober? Dunno. These are thoughts in my head. I agree with the concept that tattoos do mark a point in time – good one. Never thought about it that way. Last comment and then I’ll shut up – do you really want it on your wrist? I know you’re a creative type, but what if you end up with an acting role where you can’t have ink? It’s a pain in the ass to cover up ink (which I know too well having made a poor choice to add a more visible tattoo a few years ago that has to be covered in certain situations.) Food for thought. And congrats on 57 days!!

  2. Beautiful. I think that would be a lovely tattoo. To mark a moment in time. Sigh.

  5. I definitely hear that, but I also think what a Huge, monumental thing to commemorate, don’t you think? And, my thought is if the horrible does happen (though I am not planning on that at all), then hopefully the awesomeness of what I’ve learned will be enough to throw me back on my Radio Flyer asap. …. As for being an actor – thank you for thinking of that! As a director I’ve dealt with tats a few times and it hasn’t been too horrible. Where might be a good place do you think (derrieres excluded (ha!))? I’ve always liked the idea of the top of my foot as well, but I like the idea of being able to look down and see it. … Curious. How many tattoos do you have? Which one is your fave & why?

    I got a tattoo (my first and probably only) to mark six months of sobriety. I thought about it since starting rehab back in January, and I never wavered from the idea. I’m thrilled that I got it and have zero regrets.

    Location – Inside of the wrist should be fine, given that your work sounds fairly liberal! Top of the foot works too (especially in the summer.) I have 8 tattoos, but some were additions and enhancements to existing tattoos, so I’ve had many, many sessions of work. I don’t really have a favorite. One piece of advice is to get recommendations for GOOD artists and make sure you have a rough or better than rough idea of what you want. Spend more money than you think you should too.

  12. ‘Liberal’ is a good word for the theatre crowd. *smile* Sounds like you go for my BIL’s way of tattooing. He’s after a sleeve, and is getting close as he keeps elaborating on more and more. Thank you for the advice for artists & muhla. I shall definitely keep those in mind!
